   DEPARTMENT NEWS

FIRE TAKES NO HOLIDAY

Keep your holidays safe by implemeting fire safety into your routine.

Derby Line Fire Department recently participated in Hungerfest at the Derby Price Chopper. Local firemen assisted in loading the trailer full of donated food that will go to the local food shelf. Over $7,000.00 dollars of food was donated by the local citizens.

Please let this serve as a simple but powerful reminder for all members of our community this weekend. When you change your clocks for daylight-saving time, change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and please remind your friends, family and neighbors to do the same. It is recommended to change your batteries twice a year and to test them once a month. Any carbon monoxide detectors older than five years and any smoke detector older than ten years should be replaced.

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home structure fires in half. Thousands are injured and killed each year from home fires. Overall, roughly 66 percent of home fire deaths in this country occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Considering that residential fire deaths peak in winter months, it’s critical to check and change your smoke alarm batteries each and every fall.

HELP US HELP YOU!

Its that time of year again, the grass is getting tall and the leaves are in full bloom on the trees. This also means that emergency responders will have a hard time seeing 911 numbers on mailboxes and houses.. That’s if they are even there.  Please let this serve as a reminder to keep your house numbers as visible as possible. Statistics show that even a few seconds saved not “searching” for a house number can significantly improve the outcome during a significant medical emergency. It is also a fact that fire doubles in size every minute given the right conditions. This means finding the correct address PROMPTLY can help us prevent a trash fire from turning into a room and contents fire.

Here a few things to remember when posting your 911 numbers:

-All numbers should be visible from the street and not covered by trees or bushes.

-Numbers should be at least 4 inches in height and reflective.  Remember, numbers posted by the road prevent the responder from having to take his eyes off the road while traveling.

-Numbers should be a color that stands out from the color on which they are mounted. As nice as they look, brass numbers on a white background are not easy to locate, even during the daytime.

-Numbers should be posted so they can be seen from BOTH travel directions.

-Keep mailbox numbers clear of tall grass and snow.

Derby Line Emergency Services offer reflective 911 signs that are for sale at the Derby, Holland, and Morgan town clerks. Other communities offer them as well. Many configurations can be created including arrows and letters. EVERY house has a 911 number. If you don’t know yours, call your local town clerks office. More information and the order form is located on our website at derbyvt.org/fire.php or feel free to call me at 802-274-4502. Please help US help YOU. Have you checked your number lately?
